Ozempic Lawsuits in Florida

Ozempic is a prescription drug designed for treating type 2 diabetes. It is also being used off-label for weight loss. Like all pharmaceuticals, Ozempic has a list of side effects, but some people are now suing Ozempic for serious injury not listed as a potential risk. If you have taken Ozempic and believe it has adversely impacted you, please call our office to discuss the details.

About Ozempic

Ozempic is made by Novo Nordisk, a Danish company that was founded 100 years ago to make the newly-discovered drug, insulin, for patients with diabetes. Ozempic, the brand name for semaglutide, is a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) analog that received FDA approval on December 5, 2017.

Ozempic is an injectable medication for adults with type 2 diabetes that claims to improve blood sugar levels when used in conjunction with proper diet and exercise. It also claims to lower the risk of major cardiovascular events, such as stroke, heart attack, and heart disease in adults with type 2 diabetes. Ozempic is injected using a “pen” with a changeable needle.

What can go wrong

Like all pharmaceuticals, Ozempic comes with a list of stated possible side effects, including:

  • Thyroid tumors, including cancer
  • Inflammation of the pancreas
  • Changes in vision
  • Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia)
  • Kidney problems/kidney failure
  • Serious allergic reactions
  • Gallbladder problems
  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and constipation

But since Ozempic went on the market, other serious side effects have emerged.

Lawsuits

In August of 2022, scientists published a study in JAMA Internal Medicine showing Ozempic’s link to a higher risk of gallbladder disease and gallstones, and lawyers began accepting Ozempic gallbladder lawsuits. A number of users have already filed lawsuits against Novo Nordisk for gastroparesis, severe paralysis of the stomach and small intestine, which slows or stops the movement of food through the digestive system.

Gastroparesis can cause nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain, as mentioned in the Ozempic list of side effects, but gastroparesis is a much more serious condition than normal stomach upset. Gastroparesis can severely affect a person’s health, since the ability to digest food is compromised, leading to changes in blood sugar levels and nutritional absorption, severe dehydration, weight loss, and malnutrition.

Because there is no cure for gastroparesis, plaintiffs are seeking compensation for pain and suffering, loss of quality of life, and past and future medical expenses.

As of October 2023, there is no class action or multi-district litigation for injuries caused by Ozempic, therefore personal injury lawyers continue to file individual lawsuits against Novo Nordisk.

If you believe you have suffered serious harm to your health by using Ozempic or some other medical product, you may have the right to sue and receive compensation. As an experienced Florida personal injury attorney, I believe in “fighting for the rights of the little guy” against the highly lucrative businesses, insurance companies, and medical institutions that have the financial resources to squash your efforts to recover damages due to negligent behavior or faulty products. I leave no stone unturned to develop a powerful, winning case for my clients, and I have a track record of winning significant court awards and negotiating large settlements.
